INTERNAL PLUMBING SYSTEM PHYSICAL TEST

The internal plumbing systems of most houses or buildings have been installed using Galvanized Iron Pipe (GI Pipe) or other poor quality pipe materials. The life span of G.I. pipes is generally between five (5) to seven (7) years.

 

As these pipes get older, problems such as rust and incrustation (blockage) will occur, affecting the quality of water as well as the water pressure. In many cases, these pipes also develop underground leakage which remains undetected until the customer receives a high water bill. This results in wastage of water as well as financial losses.

 

Customers are responsible of the internal plumbing system, including the payment of high water bills due to any leakage in the internal plumbing system. As such, customers are advised to replace their old pipes with better quality pipes and inspect their internal plumbing system regularly.

HOW TO READ THE WATER METER

There are 8 digits on the water meter dial which should be read from left to right. Digits in black indicate the quantity of water consumed in cubic meters (m³) while the digits in red indicate the water consumed in liters. Only the digits in black are taken for the purpose of meter reading.

  * Example :

Physical Check On Internal Plumbing System
Test 1

To check the service pipe for leakage :

Turn off the kitchen tap and all other taps that are connected directly to the service pipes

Ensure no water flows to the water storage tank

Record the reading of the water meter

After 10 minutes, observe the reading at the water meter again

If the reading has increased, there is a leak to the pipes between the meter and the water storage tank

Test 2

To check for leakage to the distribution pipe after the water storage tank

Check for any dampness around the floor and wall area where the distribution pipes are connected

Turn off all taps which distribute water from the water storage tank when this test is being carried out

Turn off the valve before the water storage tank and ensure there is no water flowing into the tank

Mark the water level in the water storage tank

After 1-2 hours, if the water level has decreased (falls below the marked level ), there is a leak in the distribution pipe after the water storage tank

Consumer's Action

If leakage is detected, customer's should have it repaired immediately to avoid water wastage and high bills. Customer should obtain the service of licensed plumbers who are registered with SYABAS. List of these plumbers are available at SYABAS' website.

If leakage is detected, the customer is advised to repair the leakage immediately to avoid wastage of water using a registered plumber and pay the water bill.
